A Trendy Place
By Marcellus Young
YoungPlay Memories is making their mark in the crafts industry by re-inventing themselves over and over again. Their unique approach to innovation is what differentiates them from others in the crafts community. Whether it is a new fad or a trend that's here to stay, rest assured, YPM is up to date on the latest and greatest.
After in business for only 6 months, owners Nancy and Marcellus Young said, we knew it was time to expand, so we moved into a 20,000 square foot facility. Our beginning was humble, but based on our business plan projections, our growth had accelerated by two years. Now we needed to develop our infrastructure to support it. A revised plan was quickly conceived to consider new decor, amenities, tooling, staffing and most importantly, customer focused programs and incentives.
The YPM experience consists of an expansive crop area that can accommodate over 100 people, which comes in handy for the monthly Charity Crops. There's also Scrap-N-Latte, a specialty coffee and beverage lounge, where customers can enjoy their favorite drinks while listening to relaxing music. Many convenience gadgets such as the Sony Photo Kiosk station, a poster printer and a 12x12 printer are located throughout the store. Taking it one step further, instructional classes are provided ranging from novice to advance, including the custom tailored courses developed by talented and creative instructors. To round out the services and products offered, a new Bead Store and Kids Craft Store recently opened and coming soon, an Invitation Center. Our quest to create this one stop shop environment is leading us down the path to become YOUR DESTINATION FOR INSPIRATION. We have worked hard to be the one stop shop for scrapbookers, beaders and card makers.
We believe in giving the customer what they want. Good customer service and bargains provide the basis for customer perceived value. Some of the YPM perks include: a free coffee/drink at Scrap-N-Latte with a minimum purchase, Loyalty Rewards Program for members, customer appreciation crops, a customer referral program and a birthday program for members. For the computer enthusiasts, our News Group is a terrific way to stay connected and there is also an online store for those that are far away.
YPM carries full product lines of crafting materials and the largest complete line of Quickutz products in the Central Valley. We are constantly ordering full product lines and the latest products. We know that in order to survive, we have to keep up in this fast paced industry, especially since product life cycles continue to shorten.
Tradeshow events are an integral part of Young's business strategy to stay in sync with the latest trends. CHA Chicago was quite eventful. In addition to the enormous fall product line orders fulfilled, YPM also purchased a professional poster printer that caught their attention during a live demonstration. The next event YPM will participate in is Memory Trends in LasVegas and then back to CHA in Anaheim in January where they secretly have plans to launch their own product line.
We are excited about our product line. Our design teams have been working around the clock on some cutting edge original designs with various concepts. The first release will consist of over 48 different designs of paper and embellishments. We are extremely pleased with the proofs we have approved so far. We are keeping things close to the vest for now, but Scrapbook Premier readers should be on the lookout for a sneak preview very soon. With several irons already in the fire, Young believes the new product line will be YPMs biggest challenge to date.
YoungPlay Memories recently celebrated its one year anniversary in August 2006. It's a time for reflection, but it is also a time to kick-off other new and exciting ventures we have in the queue. When asked what this was all about, Young stated, I'm very pleased with the great year we have had. We opened the Largest Independently Owned Scrapbook store in California and the U.S. and we are now entering into a new phase as the Crafters Lounge.
Keeping pace with phenomenal growth in the scrapbook business has not deterred Young from other ventures. Our Bead Store, The Bead Scene, opened in September. This was a direct response to the ever changing designs and fashions seen in the craft industry, commented Young. We have to keep our fingers on the pulse and be versatile enough to give customers products and services they are interested in while demand is high.
While still in start-up mode with the current business, opening another business didn't come without significant challenges. Young performed extensive research on beads and sourced numerous suppliers. We are known for our wide selection of scrapbooking products that is competitively priced and will apply that to beads as well. Our thoughts were you can never change a first impression. We wanted to put our maximum effort upfront because we know a strong initial showing is always crucial. The scramble was on as product deliveries of precious gems, crystal, tools and beading materials flowed into the store for weeks until Young was finally ready to open the doors for business.
We are still learning new things daily, but we are having fun and that's what keeps us going. Check back with us in six months, you can bet there will something else new on the horizon. That's what makes us a trendy place.
